I once had a dream of owning a farm. To live and to survive for many years, I have completely forgotten the dream.
One day, I heard my friend Lan had bought a farm. The dream immediately sprang from my mind, so I was very interested and excited about it.
I couldn’t wait to see Lan’s farm.
At once, Sandy and I drove to Lan’s farm.
I babbled to Sandy about my dream and farm plans on the way.
I said that our farm should have chickens, ducks, and geese.
“Yes, and don’t forget rabbits.” I thought aloud, “I love rabbits with cute red eyes and white fur. If I have horses, it will be even better. “
“What!?” Sandy exclaimed.
“I said it is an if. I know the horse would need a big lawn.”
“Okay!” Sandy relaxed and said, “Looks like you want a livestock farm.”
“No, We will plant cabbage, Baize Spinach, Arugula, carrots, and sunflowers.
“Why do you want to plant sunflowers?” Sandy asked
“Because they are beautiful. I like it.” I squinted and imagined lying on the grass in the shade of the sunflowers and reading a book I love.”
“We’re here.” Sandy braked the car and took my spirit back.
I got out of the car and looked around. The farm is not more extensive—about five acres—and there are no vegetables, animals, or flowers. The fence around it almost broke.
A house in the center of the farm is under a few big trees. Green grass surrounds it, but the house has been reduced to a red roof and an empty shelf.
My friend Lan was waving her hands to beckon us over. Her husband was talking with a few people there.
Lan was proud of her farm. She took us on a landscape tour and told us about its plans.
They will rebuild the house and fences.
After she told us about the farm and her plan,
I felt that my dream was broken. I realized that before I could lay in the sun, under the sunflower, to enjoy the farm, we had to do lots of hard work. I don’t think Sandy and I could handle them.
Also, I am not a great gardener. I like to plant, but when I do, my plants sometimes grow poorly. I concluded that I was frightened of taking on the responsibilities of a real farmer.
My realization was disappointing.
I was quiet during our drive home. I was thinking about my farm dream. I am just “Ye Gong love dragon.” I couldn’t help but self-mockingly.
“What did you say?” Sandy asked
“It is an idiom from a Chinese fable,” I said
“Please tell me about it!” Sandy looked at me
“Be safe! You could listen with your ear.” I pushed Sandy’s head, making him watch the road.
“Okay! Please!”
“In ancient China, there was a man named Ye Gong. He liked dragons very much. He drew many dragons in his house. He painted Dragons on the walls and carved Dragons on the pillars. His house had dragons everywhere, up and down, front and back. The dragons bared their teeth and brandished their claws or were cute; a few were together, or only one was there.
Anyway, his house was a world of dragons.
One day, a real dragon in the heavens heard about how much Ye Gong loved the dragons. The dragon thought I should meet him and make friends with him.
So the heaven dragon decided to come to the earth to meet Ye Gong.
Suddenly, the sky was dark. The dragon mounted clouds and rode mists, coming with wind, thunder, and rain. When the dragon flew to Ye Gong’s house, poked its head into the south window, put its body on the north window, and coiled its tail to hang up the roof, the whole house was shocked to rock and rattly.
Ye Gong was frightened out of his wits when he saw the real dragon. He hurriedly hid under his bed and trembled all over.
So it turned out what Ye liked was painted and carved fake dragons but not real ones.
“Okay, right now, I understand what you mean: you professed your love to have a farm that one fears taking care of.” Sandy said, “I am happy you found that you are Ye Gong. I fear how we can handle a farm if you buy it.”
I like the idea of a farm. I like the idea of enjoying the farm’s fresh air and beautiful surroundings. In my dream, there are fresh organic vegetables and fruit. But, I really would not enjoy all the hard work.
See! I am a modern Ye Gong and dreamed of being a “Fake Dragon.”
